I've seen the Future...
Wow! It’s been a while. Fortunately, I’ve had some amazing audio experiences in the interim and I’ll begin sharing them with “dorky” enthusiasm…including NOW. These are exciting times.
So…if you’re a music lover and your budget allows…I recommend you take a serious look at the YG Acoustics Reference Series speakers. Read further, as I explain why.
In April, I considered attending AXPONA for the first time since 2019. Unfortunately, I couldn’t clear my schedule enough to make it worthwhile. However, a local haunt of mine, Glenn Poor’s Audio Video (GPAV), planned a consolation prize to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Along with a sale on all of GPAV’s electronics, YG Acoustics was bringing their Reference Series Hailey 3.2 speakers (in Dodge Viper Green...BTW, I hate green, but I LOVE this green) straight from AXPONA to remain “in residence” at GPAV.
A little background…GPAV became a YG Acoustics dealer a couple of years ago. GPAV carries several of YG’s Peaks Series models in store for demo. If you’re interested in my thoughts on YG’s Peaks Series, CH (of CH Acoustic) and I share our thoughts during a new episode of That Audio Talk (i.e. Season 3, Episode 1 – Speakers, the new Contenders). Depending on system needs, ANY of the Peaks Series models COULD be a step forward in your audiophile journey? I digress…back to the story.
YG’s Reference Series products are a step up in price (in comparison to the Peaks Series), with upgraded tweeters, waveguides, aerospace aluminum cabinets, etc.. So…the increased cost of components is obvious, but how about the sound?
I found the Hailey 3.2s difficult to describe. Rather than share a nauseating avalanche of audiophile hyperbole, I’ll focus on what happened. Over several listening sessions, I could NOT make myself critically listen with the Hailey 3.2s in place. Regardless of my seating position, or the other system components, I did the following for every second of each session.
- Comment on the song’s recording venue (e.g. studio, stage, etc.)
- Comment on the musicianship (e.g. percussion, lead guitar, horns, pianist, vocalist, etc.)
- Say something like…, “Now I get it. They (the musicians) were blah, blah, blah…” or
- “I never heard that before, but now…”
- Select the next song
I turned the volume up, turned the volume down, switched genres, played “poorly” recorded music, played “well” recorded music, switched DACs, switched amps….but ALWAYS kept the CH Acoustic cable loom in place. 😊 Same result EVERY time. I found myself listening to the performance and moving through the five (5) steps above. What does this mean to me? What should this mean to you?
I became an audiophile to listen to music. Admittedly, I spend a SIGNIFICANT amount of time auditioning components, critiquing my system, relishing the performance of my system, then repeating the process. Only when I attend concerts (e.g. Blues, Jazz, Symphonic, etc.), do I find myself commenting on the venue, the acoustics, the musicianship, etc. My joy would increase by attending more concerts and having more “concert like” experiences in my home. The YG Acoustics Hailey 3.2s brought “concert like” experiences into the listening room and they can do the same for you. They’re on my purchase list. More to come. Stay Dangerous.
